Chapter 8 - U-33

The U-boat with which Fryatt had his most infamous encounter was U-33, one of eleven members of the U-31 type of submarine built before the war in the shipyard of Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft in Kiel. It was to have a formidable career under various commanders, initially in the North Sea, but, soon after its encounter with the Brussels, it went to the Mediterranean, where it stayed for the remainder of the war, eventually being surrendered in 1919. Despite its success, Fryatt still managed to evade capture or sinking, and so the exhibition will provide some insight in to how this was possible.
